Bleeding laundry is one of the biggest problems while trying to wash clothes. Color bleeding occurs when clothing manufacturers rely on ineffective dying techniques or cheap dyes. Sometimes the dyes are simply unstable or not permanently set in the fabric.

However, there are several things you can do to prevent color bleeding from occurring in the first place. Read the following tips to learn how to stop laundry from bleeding.

  1. Take precautions by always washing new clothes separately the first time they are washed.
  2. Sort your laundry into dark colors, light colors and whites to reduces the chance for darker colors to run onto light colors, and is the most important step to prevent bleeding colors.
  3. Avoid overloading your washing machine. Stuffing too many clothes into a washing machine can make the clothes rubbing and causing color transfer.
  4. Place your laundry in a dryer as soon as the washing cycle has been completed.
  5. In order to prevent color bleeding, you can wash them in cold water. If you wash in hot water the colors will bleed easier.
  6. Soak dark or new clothes in salty water for half an hour. By soaking them, you will cause the dyes to bleed out thus diluting their color.
  7. Soften your water with white vinegar. Hard water transfers colors in the wash more easily, but it is easy to soften the water with 1/2 cup of vinegar every time you wash.
  8. Use "oxyclean" - "color catching" product in the wash every time and the color that does come out will stay in the water, not transfer to another article of clothing.
